Helpful Information

Some people have a long period of time to consider moving into a care home. For others, circumstances can mean it has to happen quickly. Either way, the amount of information you need to take in can seem quite overwhelming. Strong Life Care has experience with some of the challenges and questions you might face. You’ll find information about some of them here, but our team will be happy to help with any queries you have, too.

Paying For Care

The first question many people have is who pays for the care home. For most, this is means-tested, with anyone who has savings and/or assets above £23,250 fully responsible for the cost. However, those in need of nursing care may receive some of the costs through the NHS. Your local authority will be able to provide specific advice for your particular circumstances. Obviously, needs and income can change over time. So even if you don’t qualify for financial support right away, this may change.

Organisations such as Age UK can give you independent information on paying for care.

Choosing a care home

Choosing a care home for you or a loved one is a big decision. Taking your time to think about what you want from it will help you to make the right decision for you. You’ll find a list of questions below that provide a good starting point for thinking (and talking) about it. However, nothing beats having a look around the care home you may be interested in.

Our homes balance excellent standards of care with the feel of family life. You’ll find a diverse range of people living with us, and all kinds of activities within our communities. Should you wish to pay us a visit, our team will be happy to show you around and welcome as many questions as you can think of.

Finding The Right Care

Things To Consider

Finding the right care home means asking the important questions. From fees and facilities to personal preferences and community spirit, making sure your needs are met helps you or your loved one feel truly at home.

  • Is it clear what’s included in the fees and anything that isn’t?
  • Does the home meet a variety of needs (and will it meet yours should they change)?
  • Do they cater for those with disabilities and special needs?
  • Is the community diverse and inclusive?
  • What kind of communal areas would suit you, and does the home have a choice?
  • Do the bedrooms include ensuite facilities?
  • Can you personalise your room (and how would you like to)?
  • Are there fire alarms and nurse call systems in the bedrooms?
  • How can residents maintain their independence (and how would you like to)?
  • What activities and entertainment are there, and how often?
  • Are additional services available (e.g. hairdressing, physiotherapists, chiropodists)?
  • How flexible are routines (e.g. mealtimes and visiting times)?
  • Can you invite friends and family along to meals and outings?
  • What kinds of foods are served (do these meet your dietary needs and preferences)?
  • What training do staff have and how is it kept up to date?
  • Can you keep your own doctor, dentist, etc?
  • Can residents keep pets?
  • Does it feel welcoming and inviting?
  • Can you speak with some of the current residents and their families?
